The kitchen island has become the true heart of the modern home — part prep station, part breakfast bar, part gathering spot. The lighting above it needs to work just as hard as the surface below.
As a general rule, hang pendants 30–36 inches above the counter, spaced so they don't block sightlines across the island. For a run of two or three lights, keep a consistent gap of roughly 24–30 inches between fixtures.
Glass globes and glass-and-wood combinations are especially popular for islands because they diffuse light evenly without creating harsh shadows on the countertop, while still letting the fixture itself be a visual feature. If your island is compact, a single statement pendant often reads better than a cluster.
