A stairwell is one of the few places in a home with enough vertical drop to genuinely showcase a large-scale chandelier — and yet it's often left with a single, forgettable flush-mount fixture.
For a double-height stairwell, a long, linear or cascading chandelier that runs parallel to the stair line draws the eye upward and makes the whole space feel intentional rather than accidental. As a starting point, the fixture should hang so its lowest point sits roughly 7 feet above the highest stair tread it passes over, to keep it clear of anyone walking past.
Because stairwell chandeliers are usually viewed from multiple angles and distances as people move through the space, designs with visual interest from every side — cascading crystal, sculptural metalwork, or an open cage silhouette — tend to work better than fixtures designed to be seen head-on.
